Here's an updated list of ads from my landlord. He's reduced the rates and he loves pets. He also has a great handyman on call 24-7. This is my second year in my apartment and I've been very pleased. Note from JW: The Meadows allows animals and has quite a community of dogs. The only unfortunate part is the steep non-refundable pet deposit, $300 per dog, $200 per cat... really only worth it if you plan on staying several years or more. I've been there since August and I do like it, but sometimes find the management frustrating to deal with.

Hello All!

For those of you that aren't busy enough already with the holidays approaching and the end of the semester creeping upon us just as fast... several people asked me for the recipe from the treats I made the day of the Dog Halloween Party... and yeah it is a month later, but here it is!

"Newf Breakfast Bars" (taken from online, but I come up with my own names depending on what I add)

12 cups oatmeal
4 cups whole wheat flour
8 eggs
3/4 cup oil
2/3 cup honey
1/2 cup molasses
2 cups milk
1 large can solid packed pumpkin (optional)
3 to 4 mashed bananas (optional)

Preheat oven to 325. Grease two cookie sheets. (I use the ones with sides instead of just the flat cookie sheets)

Dump everything into a VERY large bowl. Mix this whole mess together (I use my hands, makes it easier), pat onto greased cookie sheets and bake at 325 for 1 hour. After 1 hour turn oven off, crack oven door, and allow cookies to cool in oven. Break into whatever size you want (I take the whole sheet out onto a cutting board and cut them up various sizes depending on who Kali is going to share them with... she likes her's small).

Ok... there it is copied directly as I found it from the internet besides my side pieces in parenthesis. In addition... what I like about this recipe which I called the Pumpkin Oatmeal cookies for the Halloween party is that you can be very creative in adding/swapping various ingredients. For Kali, I substitute rice flour for the wheat flour, applesauce for the oil, and I decrease the amount of molasses and honey... adding a little extra of whatever I put in as the optional for the moistness (Kali prefers softer treats so I always add extra of whatever fruit/veggie I put in it). Tonight I did one (1/2 of the recipe) as I did for the dog park with pumpkin and the other half I did with carrots and a pear grated up. I did not use the applesauce in place of the oil before so that is new tonight too, a healthier substitute. I also made Kali some "Peanut Butter Biscuits" tonight, she didn't seem as excited about them as the pumpkin oatmeal ones... hers are more like cookies. What I really like about especially the recipe above is they freeze great... so even though it makes a large batch... it is great to have a stash in the freezer. I keep them refrigerated as well instead of out in Kali's cookie jar to keep them fresh.

I hope you all have a wonderful holiday next week! I am off to clean up the disaster of a mess I made in the process of making treats for Kali because I have final papers that I also must get writing and packing to do yet!!!

I work with Akita Rescue of Western New York, and we're doing an on-line book sale (via Amazon.com) to raise $ for our rescue efforts. Some of the $ that we earn has also gone to help the Schuyler County Humane Society, and the Shultz Shelter in Waterloo.

We're asking for donations of good quality (to new!) books, CD's & videos, which we post on line & sell. We've already made oaver $1,000 this way. Our group alone has placed over 60 dogs to date in 2004 -- and there are always more coming.

It is small/medium size, airline approved, and is the right size for small dogs like pugs, small poodles, cocker spaniels etc. It is red and in perfect working condition. • GREAT GREAT DOG AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION!! Miekayla is a 4 year-old female white Great Pyrenees. She is deaf, and trained with sign language. She is a therapy dog who is also trained to predict the oncoming of seizures. Due to Miekayla's owner's declining health, she is currently at the Elmira SPCA. She will be put down in 5 DAYS if a home cannot be found for her. Miekayla is a very sweet and gentle dog whose favorite toys are Beanie Babies. • Help find a home for Sweetie Pie There is a WONDERFUL, sweet, Pit Bull at the SPCA of Westchester who needs to find a home. This dog is special, please help her find a home. I see hundreds of dogs who need homes, "Sweetie Pie" stands out as an exceptional companion.

  "Sweetie Pie" is a 3-4 yr old female spayed Pit Bull who needs a home. She has been at the SPCA of Westchester for several months. This shelter is open admission for one of the local towns where there are known Pit Bull fighting rings. The shelter has too many Pit Bulls, many are not able to find loving homes. "Sweetie Pie" is a special dog who deserves! to find her forever home. She is extremely sweet, as shown by her name. She is all white, with brown rings around her eyes, and brown freckles on her nose. She has many scars on her face and legs, reminders of the previous cruelty she has experienced. "Sweetie Pie" loves people. She will gently take a cookie from your hand, give you a kiss on the face, and try to crawl into your lap. She has shown no interest or aggression towards cats at the shelter. She likes some dogs, but not all other dogs. (This is understandable considering her tough past). "Sweetie Pie" is a special dog who will make a great companion for a lucky person.

Dog Park The issue of the Ithaca Dog Park at Treman Marina is once again in play. Responding to complaints, the state park police have begun ticketing off-leash dog walkers.

A meeting was held on Tuesday, Sept. 2, to share information and discuss strategies. Among the results of this meeting was a decision to undertake a Dog-Based Tourism (DBT) Initiative.
